Automatic External Defibrillators (aka AEDs)
Each year sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) strikes over 360,000 people in the United States. The majority of these people have no warning and have no prior symptoms and sadly less than 6% survive.
When SCA occurs, CPR is important but it alone cannot restore a normal heart rhythm. An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) enables virtually anyone to help a victim of SCA by delivering a shock to the individuals heart in an attempt to restore the hearts normal pumping rhythm.
"Immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and early defibrillation, with an automated external defibrillator (AED), can more than double a victim’s chance of survival. For every minute that passes without CPR and defibrillation, the chances of survival decrease by 7–10%."
- American Heart Association
There are not enough AEDs and persons trained in using them and performing CPR to provide life-saving treatment, resulting in lost opportunities to save more lives. Tragically, 64% of Americans have never even seen an AED.
If your organization has decided to purchase an Automated External Defibrillator for your environment you're joining the ranks of well-prepared potential lifesavers everywhere. From schools, churches, gyms, shopping malls, workplaces and airports, AEDs are becoming the norm in well-equipped safe, public and private environments across the world.
